Curriculum Based Programmes
Each programme is specifically designed to fit into the Province's New Curriculum guidelines. The programmes outlined below address the specific learning objectives for Science and Social Studies curriculum.

Grade 1 – Half Day *
Needs and Characteristics of Living Things
Through instruction and interactive games, students will learn about the basic needs of animals and plants. They will investigate the characteristics of animals and plants by using their senses and by observing the animals on location.
* Combine with farm or pond for full day

Grade 2 – Half Day *
Growth and Changes in Animals
Explore the similarities and differences between various types of animals using instruction, interactive games and observation. This programme also incorporates ways in which animals respond and adapt to their environment, descriptions of behavioural characteristics that enable animals to survive, and effects of the seasons on animals.
* Combine with farm or pond for full day

Grade 2 – Half Day or Full Day
Air and Water in the Environment
Learn about the characteristics of air and the various forms of water in the environment through instruction and by taking part in various experiments. Learn about changes in water when it is heated and cooled, about the water cycle through an interactive game and about air as a substance that takes up space and whose movement we feel as wind. Understand air and water movement through the environment using hands on activities.

Grade 3 – Half Day
Soils in the Environment
Students will learn the similarities and differences between various soils and the effects of moving water on these soils though instruction, a walkabout and interactive games. The dependence of living things on soil will be explored as students experience our vermiculture programme.

Grade 3 – Half Day or Full Day
Growth and Changes in Plants
Identify the major parts of plants, the similarities and differences in the physical characteristics of different plant species and the changes that take place in different plants as they grow through instruction and interactive games. Students have the opportunity to learn hands on about vermiculture and to take home their own plant.

Grade 4 – Full Day
Habitats and Communities
An introduction identifying factors that affect plants and animals is followed by an interactive game on food webs. Consider how living things have adapted to their specific environments. The effects on plants and animals from loss of natural habitat is discussed and played out in a game format. Data can be compiled for future, in-class discussion.

Grade 6 – Full Day
Biodiversity
Play a game to help explain classification systems. Determine some characteristics common to vertebrate and invertebrate phyla and make observations and record data. Visit the pond or stream to examine samples of different phylum. Plant classification will be observed though keying out trees and exploring the forest for diversity.

Grade 7 – Full Day
Interactions Within Ecosystems
What makes up an ecosystem? Abiotic and biotic things are discussed. Decomposers are introduced as a concept and a game about ecosystem jobs is played. Food webs are important to all species, become part of a food web during a game. Field and forest study charts help as we check out various ecosystems.

Social Studies

Grade 3 – Half Day
Urban and Rural Communities
Props are used to demonstrate the process of urbanization. Students will explore our property and conduct a "Sensational Survey". Combine with a half day farm or orienteering program.

Grade 4 – Full Day
Orienteering (Developing Map Skills)
Learn to solve navigational problems and have lots of fun. Use of maps, symbols, (compass for older grades), and more as navigational tools will be discussed. Grade appropriate tools and concepts.
